I've been following some of your work for years, and I love getting to see something more serious from you.

I love the story and characters here, they seem so real. I think you might want to work a bit on the flow of your pages, though. I got a bit distracted by the paneling while reading (but that might just be me). Congratulations!

I read through again to see what was bothering me. (Sorry if this is a bit slow, my internet turned into a snail)

On page 006 the sudden detail in the fourth panel seemed a bit cluttered compared to previous backbrounds.

Page 014, the top two panels not lining up seemed to distract me a bit.

The sudden texture on the parents' silhouettes seemed out of place, since everything was only one colour before-- though I can see why you used it.

Aaand on page 023 some negative space at the bottom left caught my attention. This was the most distracting, as it was on an important page.

This comment is so long. The fact that I can pick these things out means that the rest was great, though, and I love the sketch-y colouring, especially in the backgrounds.

I really like how you make the story flow from panel to panel. Like, a lot.

Um, I have some questions pertaining to your process: Did you do all the drawing steps on the computer (like sketch/lineart)? Did you script/thumbnail this comic (I ask this particularly because you have stated previously that you do everything pretty much on an as-needed basis)?

reply

kids_can_fly: Thank you. :) And I'll answer your questions, of course!

Since I was tight on time, I did everything on the computer. Most of the time, I didn't even do lineart, I just adjusted the sketches and made them less messy (haha I'm so bad D;) For some of the panels, I first drew it on paper to get the feel and then drew it on the computer (didn't have a scanner handy)

For the first half of the comic, I didn't use thumbnails or any plans but as I neared the end, I realized I needed to lay my thoughts down properly (or else it was gonna be a disaster). So I made a script (mostly for the parents' arguments) and then made little tiny thumbnails. This totally isn't how I usually do things BUT the last scenes were pretty crucial and I didn't want to mess them up with poor planning.

And thanks for the comments everyone! I'm relieved that most of you seemed to enjoy dinner43!! :) I'm really happy, thank you everyone.

The whole story was beautifully bittersweet, and every page had my thoughts gripping to my heart. I can't really say that i can relate directly to the situation, but its a painfully true subject to a lot of people, and this web comic really says a lot about them. The hands especially commented on how he felt, and the atmosphere conveyed ( be it unintentional or not ) by the sketchiness and blues carried the whole thing splendidly. Otherwise, im at a complete loss for words.

Kudos to you sir/ma'am, your comic was very heartfelt.

Out of all the web-comics you've done (that I know of anyways), I would say this is the best one. By far. Which is saying a lot seeing how good your other web-comics are already.

As people have said before, the comic has emotion. The experimental artwork is well done. It's a nice story focusing on the emotional problems of Hiroyuki, and by the time you finish reading the 31 pages, you think to yourself "That. Was. Amazing."

At first I was kind of confused as to why you included him sharing a meal with his friend's family in the beginning, but after having read the whole thing, it makes a lot more sense. I can really tell that this story is deep and personal to you. It kinda broke my heart, very tragic. I think they way you portrayed it made it even more heart-wrenching, esp. for me the skeleton arms.

Anyway, great job on a very well done comic!
